To exist? For nutrition? For pleasure? When I made my fowl-rice soup yesterday, I made it because my husband had a sore throat. Given the various viruses floating around in our Oklahoma air, I assumed he was getting a cold. One strain is running its course through our daughter's family as I type.
Chicken soup is an old Jewish remedy for soothing a cold-riddled body. It is the first thing after aspirin and liquids I prescribe for colds. For years, folks have fed the fever and starved the cold. I have various recipes for my fowl-soups. Chicken with acini de pepe. Turkey and rice. Stews. And simple broths. With each soup I prepare, I find I have more than a dinner or lunch in mind when I make it.
Each has ingredients that meet a need for the day. On bitter-cold days when everyone is well, there's simply nothing like a great hearty stew or steaming hot bowl of chili. After church on winter Sunday nights, a mixture of veggies with beef and a grilled cheese sandwich on the side, tops off a day in a comforting way. When a cold invades my body, a broth made with celery, onion and a chicken thigh does more to soothe my sore throat and open my stuffy head, than all the antihistamines and Tylenols I use sparingly when I am sick.
Esau implored, "Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary," (Genesis 25:30.) Food meets many needs--comfort, nutrition, and healing.
To my husband and I, soups hit the spot of palatable pleasures we seek when we're weak or when we are strong. And just as my soups vary in purpose, so do my blogs.
As you may know by the variety of blogsites I write, there's probably at least one to soothe your soul, whet your appetite for thought, or can be prescribed for someone you know who is suffering a similar plight I describe. As I prepare the recipes for FOOD MATTERS (and many will speak of real food and its place in our lives), I hope you can find a tidbit to whet your appetite for more of SelahV Today and with Kids, Teens, Women and more as you peruse the menu I offer.
