Today in First Baptist Maryville, Missouri, a fellow brother in Christ and pastor, Fred Winston, was gunned down in his pulpit. He was doing all God called him to do. Yet some unknown assailant entered the sanctuary and shot him three times. He continued to fire at others in the congregation until his gun jammed. Then, according to witnesses, he began stabbing himself. What possesses a person to do such a thing? What lurks inside the soul of man that causes such evil behavior? A depraved indifference to God and man? A conscience void of fear for the Almighty Creator?
"By mercy and love, truth and fidelity [to God and man, not by sacrificial offerings] iniquity is purged out of the heart, and by the reverent, worshipful fear of the Lord men depart from and avoid evil." Proverbs 16:6,7.
The above gunman could not have had the reverent, worshipful fear of the Lord. If he had, he would not have committed such a violent crime against innocent men. The pastor has met his Savior today. The gunman is being treated in surgery. Will he have another chance to turn from his wicked ways? Will this event close the doors of hell to him and open the gates of heaven? We can only pray for all those involved. The grieving family, his friends, his church family--and yes, this man who needs iniquity to be purged from his heart. selahV
