We all know people who are so kind and generous that we feel greedy in their presence. We know Christians so engaged in serving others that it exhausts us just to watch them. We know people who are so filled with the Spirit of the Lord, they ooze mercy, goodness, and grace with every breath they take. And we wonder. How is it that so many trials befall them? Why won't God answer our prayers when we pray for them in their time of need?
Such is the case of someone I've prayed for lately who is enduring great trial. My heart breaks for them. I reminded God of how hard they work, how dedicated they are to Him. I reminded God of how they've sacrificed for others at the expense of their losses and discomfort. Did I pray amiss? Did not Nehemiah also pray for himself in this fashion?
"O my God, remember me for good for all I have done for this people." Nehemiah 5:19
As I read through Nehemiah's account, I was hit with the fact that there is no good that we can do that warrants a blessing. Blessings are those miraculous things we do not deserve. They are the goodness and mercy of God's heart. How can I place another's actions upon God's scales for measuring what He should or should not do? Nehemiah pleaded with God, "O My God, remember me concerning this and wipe not out my good deeds and kindnesses done for the house of my God and for His service." {ch. 13:14)
How often have I thought when suffering some awful thing not of my making that God had forgotten my good deeds--my allegiance to Him. How many times have I questioned the circumstances of my life? Nehemiah must have felt the results of his faithfulness could very easily be held against him because the people did not follow his instructions: "But I reproved and warned them...I commanded the Levites to cleanse themselves, and come and guard the gates to keep the Sabbath day holy. O my God, remember me concerning this also and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy and loving-kindness." {13:21,22)
"According to the greatness of Your mercy and loving-kindness." Not for any good done in accordance to His commands. Not for occasional obedience. Not for giving back what has been given. Not for anything other than the mercy and grace of God should I pray. Jesus prayed that God be glorified in the feeding of the thousands, of the resurrection of Lazarus. I can pray no other way but this. So undeserving we are of God's favor. So blessed we are because of His mercy and love. This truth makes the heaviest of burdens for ourselves and others much lighter today. selahV
