I sit here waiting for my great-grandson to come pushing his way into our lives with all his might. My granddaughter waits impatiently as contractions continually come in waves of repetitive rhythm for hours, then stop. Latent labor is what she is in. Constantly contracting on the whim of her impatient womb. We know Ethan is coming; his birth is certain. But the time is not yet full–his appointed hour has not yet come. Not even the day has been determined for sure. Walks around the mall won’t make Ethan come if it is not his time to come.
As Believers we wait for our Lord’s return. We know not the hour when the trumpet will blow and He will return with His rewards in hand. But we know He is coming and we sometimes get impatient thinking about the aggravation of His laboring church body. We groan at the contractions of muscles and will and emotions which try to force the Bride into early labor. We think it our responsibility to make Her after our own images. But only Christ can create His church. Only He can perfect her. We are not responsible for Her perfection; He is working out all things to His glory to complete in us His plan for the day of redemption. We know He is coming as surely as I know my great-grandson is coming. We look forward to His coming with great expectation and hope.
“But we as citizens of the state which is in heaven, and from it also we earnestly and patiently await [the coming of] the Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) [as] Savior, Who will transform and fashion anew the body of our humiliation to conform to and be like the body of His glory and majesty, by exerting that power which enables Him even to subject everything to Himself.” Philippians 3:20, 21.
What expectations are there for the lost and unbelieving. What are they waiting for? Some wait for the opportune time. Some till there is no more time. As far as they are concerned, this earth is their home–their citizenship is here. They have no hope beyond this place. But for us there is expectancy. And we know when He comes He will transform us and fashion us to conform to and be like Him. What a glorious thing to wait for! selahV
