There are many things being presented to us today that are not of God. There are television programs with people who claim to speak to the dead. There are false teachers and prophets. There are people who seek our support who do not deserve our support.
“Beloved, do not put faith in every spirit, but prove (test) the spiriits to discover whether they proceed from God; for many false prophets have gone forth into the world.” 1 John 4:1
We are warned not to place our faith in unproven things—nor people. We are told that not everything we hear will come from God. There will be people who present a picture to us that may appeal to our flesh and emotions. But we are not to get taken in by them. John tells us “by this you may know (perceive and recognize) the Spirit of God; every spirit which acknowledges and confesses [the fact] that Jesus Christ (the Messiah) [actually] has become man and has come in the flesh is of God [has God for its source];” 1 John 4:2.
Whenever we have a question in our minds or hearts about the validity of someone, we need only check them against their profession of faith in Jesus. Unless a person acknowledges Jesus, a person cannot be trusted. And if one acknowledges Jesus but yet lives contrary to His principles and teachings, then we must give little weight to their words.
We must see the love, gentleness, joy, patience, self-control and goodness exhibited to assure us of a genuine faith and sincere spirit. “Against these there is no law.” selahV
